For Schools

StarTime Studios provides in-school workshops for ages 6-12yrs and secondary schools. From physical theatre to film-making, we provide the right coaches to conduct classes that are in line with the objectives and outcomes as set out in the curricula by the NSW Department of Education.

As each school’s needs is different, we enjoy working together in order to create the best possible program, to suit your budget. All our workshops strive to provide the students and teachers with practical, take-home exercises, that can be used and built upon. We work towards a goal in each workshop, whether that be a performance, short film, dance or song. Students, teachers and parents will be please with the results of the work.

The workshop that was provided for our students enabled them to experience compiling a text type from the initial thought process through to the final filming of their work. Having a specific purpose to construct text gave them an added incentive to be fully involved at all stages of construction. The actual preparing for, and filming, on the day was an experience I encourage others to provide for their students. The students were totally absorbed. They were encouraged and extended in a supportive environment. They learnt much about the film processes. The excitement engendered was motivational in itself and has given our students a broader understanding of the genre of film as well as providing them with some initial skills in this area.

Film-Making Workshops

Film-making and drama are great ways for teachers to combine many learning outcomes. Why? Because drama and storytelling is the natural way humans learn - especially children. Children are great mimics. They play-act with their parents and friends, so why not let us bring this dynamic learning to your classroom in a modern, relevant context. Drama outcomes will be assessed and integrated with your choice of Key Learning Area or theme topic.

The fundamentals of film-making and digital media will become increasingly vital for students to grasp as it becomes the preferred method of communication.  Our professional artists and film makers will help students and teachers alike to apply these fundamentals in a practical, effective and creative manner.

Students will learn how to:
•  Script and storyboard their ideas using dialogue, descriptions and illustrations.
•  Use fun improvisation exercises to free their imaginations and create characters
•  Shoot, Edit and produce their final piece for a film festival showing at their school.
•  Explore the different text types including persuasive texts, procedure texts, narratives, reports, recounts and explanations.
•  Produce a film, TV Show, documentary, news item, lifestyle program or Current Affairs segment based on your topic of choice from the curriculum.

Musical Theatre Workshops

School productions are an enormous undertaking that requires a lot of organising and creative energy. StarTime helps realise your vision, and inspire an atmosphere of fun and creativity by providing musical theatre specialists in all areas including technical and lighting design. We also provide workshops to ensure students gain maximum learning opportunities through the production process.

The modules below is approached in a variety of ways. Either as one off workshops dealing with
one particular module, or over a number of weeks. Here, we can go into more depth and cover more modules with the particularly keen students.

•  Storytelling in Musical Theatre
•  The Ensemble & Chorus
•  Stage Craft
•  Different Styles of Musical Theatre
•  Characterisation
•  Personalizing
•  Dealing with Performance Anxiety

If you hire one of our Musical Theatre coaches to be a part of your production team they can also cover these topics while working with the various ensembles, albeit in a more ad-hoc fashion. The specialist workshops can be applied to older and younger kids with varying levels of ability.

Physical Theatre Workshops

Our brand of Physical Theatre is impulse based, evolving from the techniques developed by the great Polish theatre pioneers and practitioners, Jerzy Grotowski and Stenyevski: the actor’s ability to fully engage body, voice, mind and spirit - without the use of props, lighting or special effects. Together with the actor’s connection with their fellow actor, ensemble and audience, this form of acting creates a truly dynamic theatre and a great exercise in team building.

In our Workshop students learn:
•  The fundamentals of musicality: rhythm and song as a driving force for physical action that underpins and informs storytelling.

•  Mutuality forms connections with the self, one’s partner and most importantly, the ensemble.

•  There is training in basic acrobatics, freeing the physical body, counterbalancing techniques, song harmonies and how to devise stories and theatre from these techniques.
